Urgent call for south London blood donors amid 'slump' after bank holidays
Briefly

Brixton Donor Centre faces increasing pressure to fill 1,000 blood donation slots weekly due to high bank holiday demands and half-term breaks. NHS Blood and Transplant urges new and lapsed donors to book appointments immediately to prevent a 'spring slump' in blood donations. Specific outreach is aimed at black heritage donors crucial for treating sickle cell disease, requiring 1,300 donations per month. The center reports a higher collection of Ro subtype donations than the national average. Additionally, blood types O negative, O positive, and A positive are in high demand, emphasizing community participation.
The need for blood never stops. We are extremely grateful to everyone who has donated so far this year, but we must act now to avoid falling behind.
There is a particular need for donors of black heritage to meet the growing need for blood to treat sickle cell, the country's fastest-growing inherited blood disorder.
Each donation has the power to save up to three lives. If you can’t find an appointment straightaway, please book further ahead or keep checking back.
South Londoners with O negative, O positive and A positive blood types are also being encouraged to donate, as these blood groups are in high demand.
