Astros call up top prospect Matthews for debut
Briefly

Brice Matthews, the Houston Astros’ top prospect, has been called up from Triple-A Sugar Land. His debut comes ahead of a series against the Texas Rangers, but it will prevent him from participating in the MLB All-Star Futures Game. Matthews performed well at Sugar Land, hitting .283 with an .876 OPS, and achieving 10 home runs, 39 RBIs, and 25 stolen bases in 73 games. At 23, he was the Astros' minor league player of the month in June and was selected 28th overall in the 2023 draft.
Matthews' arrival in the major leagues will knock him out of Saturday's MLB All-Star Futures Game at Atlanta after he was selected following a productive first half at Sugar Land.
He batted .283 with an .876 OPS, 10 home runs and 39 RBIs in 73 games, while his 25 stolen bases are fourth in the Pacific Coast League.
Matthews is a Houston-area native who was selected with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2023 draft out of Nebraska.
Matthews was ranked as Houston's top prospect by MLB Pipeline.
