FAB flashback: Exhibition celebrates Thunderbirds, Stingray and the golden age of futuristic TV
"Step inside, and you're greeted by shelves overflowing with the toys many of us once begged for - or, if we were lucky, owned. There's the iconic Thunderbird 2 - a personal favourite, though as a child living abroad and seeing the show years later, I was mildly crestfallen to learn it was "just" a cargo plane. Still, that green leviathan retains all its charm."
"In true Museum of Brands style, the emphasis here is on the packaging - the bright box art and magazine covers that teased boundless adventure. The exhibition reminds us that often, it was the promise on the front of the box that did most of the heavy lifting, letting imagination fill in the rest. Among the highlights for me were View-Master reels - those little discs once hailed as the future of home entertainment -"
The Museum of Brands assembles a time capsule of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson television universes, featuring Thunderbirds, Stingray, Captain Scarlet, Supercar, Fireball XL5, UFO and Space: 1999. The collection emphasizes the tidal wave of branded merchandise that accompanied 1960s and 1970s TV, with shelves of toys and an archival focus on packaging, box art and magazine covers. Highlights include the iconic Thunderbird 2, View-Master reels and cereal boxes decorated with space heroes. The original Tracy Island toy appears alongside reminders of DIY culture such as the Blue Peter version. The material captures a moment when mid-century futures gleamed with chrome optimism.
