"Murray began during Tuesday's budget hearing, adding: There are reports that you're using FBI resources to investigate journalists for reporting. What's going on? And that is absolutely not what this committee intended when we funded the Bureau. Patel replied, Senator, I greatly appreciate the question, and I continue to say unequivocally: This FBI is targeting and investigating no journalists."
Sen. Patty Murray questioned FBI Director Kash Patel about reports involving FBI investigations into journalists and claims that Patel ordered polygraphs and other measures to identify leakers. Murray asked Patel to commit that no agent hours were pulled from counterterrorism or violent crime work to address negative press or his personal lawsuit. Patel responded that the FBI is targeting and investigating no journalists and that no agent hours have been diverted. Murray pressed again after reports circulated that FBI resources were used to investigate journalists. Patel reiterated that the claims were not true. The exchange followed reporting that the FBI investigated a journalist colleague after an unflattering story about Patel.
