Erik Spoelstra praised Dru Smith’s grit and perseverance, calling those traits a "superpower" and saying Smith "has no quit in him." The Heat signed Smith quickly in the offseason after the Haywood Highsmith trade opened a roster spot. Smith was cleared for 5-on-5 on-court work and participated in the team's first practice, though full clearance remains pending as he recovers from an Achilles injury. Before the season-ending injury, Smith averaged eight points and three rebounds, shooting 52 percent overall and 56 percent from three on 24 minutes per game. Smith provides strong defense off the bench and could become the backup point guard behind Davion Mitchell, reducing pressure on rookie Kasparas Jakucionis.
