"He had a power barrage in the middle of April, slugging six homers through April 16. It remained an all-or-nothing approach, however, and Mervis slumped to a .175/.254/.383 batting line by the time the Marlins waived him at the end of May. Subsequent minor league contracts with the Diamondbacks and Nationals haven't gotten him back to the highest level."
Matt Mervis signed with the Algodoneros de Unión Laguna of the Mexican League. The deal was announced after his team debut, where he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Mervis, 28, reached the MLB level each season from 2023 to 2025. He previously drew prospect attention by hitting 36 home runs across three minor league levels in 2022. After debuting in the majors in 2023, he struck out 32 times in his first 99 plate appearances. His strikeout rate remained high, including a 30% clip in Triple-A in 2024, and he appeared in only nine MLB games. Traded to Miami before 2025, he started with power but slumped to a .175/.254/.383 line before being waived in late May. Minor league stints with the Diamondbacks and Nationals did not restore his MLB readiness, and he was released after a brief Triple-A appearance. He will try to rebuild in Mexico and earn another minor league contract.
