Iraq reopens Mosul airport 11 years after ISIL conflict, destruction

The northern city of Mosul has inaugurated its newly restored airport, which has not operated since the ISIS takeover in 2014. The airport will feature a main terminal and a VIP lounge, functioning as a connection between Mosul and other Iraqi cities as well as regional destinations. Fully operational status for both domestic and international flights is expected within two months, following the foundation's stone-laying ceremony nearly three years ago. The airport had previously offered international flights, primarily to Turkiye and Jordan.
The airport, which has not been operational since the group seized Mosul in 2014, will have a main terminal and VIP lounge.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has inaugurated the northern city of Mosul's newly restored airport, more than a decade after it was destroyed in a series of battles.
The airport will serve as an additional link between Mosul and other Iraqi cities and regional destinations.
Airport director Amar al-Bayati told the AFP news agency that the airport is now ready for domestic and international flights.
