Left-wing parties backing Catherine Connolly's presidential campaign sought to distance themselves from her comments that terrorist organisation Hamas could have a role in a future Palestinian state. Labour Party TD Alan Kelly publicly called for Ms Connolly to retract her remarks. Mr Kelly quoted Connolly saying Hamas is "part of the fabric" of the Palestinian people and emphasized that it is up to the Palestinian people who should govern in any future state.
