Maja T.: German anti-fascist found guilty in Hungarian court
"On Wednesday (February 4, 2026), Maja T.*, an anti-fascist activist from the eastern German city of Jena (Thuringia), was found guilty by a court in Hungary of having attacked and seriously injured several suspected right-wing extremists in Budapest in February 2023. The attacks had apparently been directed at individuals thought to have participated in the annual "Day of Honor" rally of neo-Nazis from all over Europe, held in the Hungarian capital."
"The verdict is not yet final it can still be appealed through Hungary's judicial process. The Hungarian public prosecutor's office had initially demanded a 24-year prison sentence as a "deterrent." The prosecution argued that T. belonged to a left-wing extremist group with a total of 19 members, which had attacked nine people who subsequently suffered broken bones and head injuries."
Maja T., a 25-year-old anti-fascist from Jena, was convicted in Hungary for attacking and seriously injuring suspected right-wing extremists in Budapest in February 2023. The court found T. guilty of attempted grievous bodily harm and participation in a criminal organization. The verdict can still be appealed through Hungary's judicial process. Prosecutors sought a 24-year sentence and alleged T. belonged to a 19-member left-wing extremist group that attacked nine people, causing broken bones and head injuries. T. was extradited from Germany in June 2024, held in solitary confinement, and the German Federal Constitutional Court ruled the trial should not have proceeded in Hungary because insufficient checks were made before extradition to ensure humane detention conditions, especially given that Maja T. identifies as non-binary. Supporters staged a protest for T.'s release outside Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul's office.
