European intelligence and military officials suspect Russian space vehicles intercepted about a dozen European satellites, potentially exposing sensitive information and enabling later interference with spacecraft. Ground-based telescopes have tracked Russian Luch-1 and Luch-2 vehicles maneuvering close to key EU satellites, with such activity increasing over the three years since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Many Western satellites transmit unencrypted data or rely on onboard encryption systems, allowing intercepted transmissions to be recorded and later used to send false commands. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius warned that satellite networks are an Achilles heel and that future conflicts will be fought openly in orbit.
