Ryanair announces November date for move to 100pc paperless boarding passes
"The move had first been planned for May, and was subsequently delayed to November 3, shortly after the switch from summer to winter schedules. The latest change is to ensure "a seamless transition" for customers and avoid the busy mid-term break, it said. The move to paperless boarding passes is designed to reduce costs, paper and check-in desks, and means Ryanair passengers will no longer be able to to print boarding passes when checking in online."
"Michael O'Leary, Ryanair's chief executive, recently said he expected some " teething problems " with the change, although almost 80pc of its passengers already use digital boarding passes. If passengers lose their phone, or their battery dies, Mr O'Leary has said there will be "no issue". As long as people have checked in before arriving at the airport, staff will reissue paper boarding pass at the airport free of charge, he said."
Ryanair will require digital boarding passes generated in its app for all passengers from November 12, ending the ability to print boarding passes when checking in online. The change aims to reduce costs, paper use, and check-in desk demand while avoiding the busy mid-term travel period. The app provides live flight updates, disruption information, and in-flight food and drink ordering. About 80% of passengers already use digital boarding passes, though some teething problems are expected. Staff will reissue paper boarding passes free of charge for checked-in passengers, and the €20 reissue fee will be waived from November 3. Some destinations, such as Morocco and Albania, will continue to accept only printed boarding passes.
