Kim Le Court surprised everyone by earning a time bonus on stage 2 of the Tour de France Femmes, which allowed her to tie with Marianne Vos for the overall lead. Due to a tie-breaker, Le Court was awarded the yellow jersey, marking a historic achievement as the first non-European, African, and Mauritian to wear it in this event. While celebrating this momentous occasion, she expressed her desire to contribute to the growth of African cycling. Her team plans to defend the lead as they approach more challenging stages in the race.
"I couldn't believe it. To be honest I'm still in shock," said Le Court. Her AG Insurance-Soudal team had a plan to chase yellow... making her the first non-European, African and Mauritian to wear yellow in the rebooted version of the Tour de France Femmes.
"It's never been on my mind that I want to be the first African," said Le Court. "Its a goal that we have with the team and with myself to achieve to wear yellow ... but to achieve that is extremely special and I want to try and keep growing African Cycling."
"Of course, we knew that Kim was in a really good shape. She felt really strong physically, but also mentally," team sports director Jolien D'Hoore told a small group of reporters.
"Yeah, we couldn't imagine having it, but now we have it now, we have to defend it, of course. And like, I say, we're gonna take it day by day and see how it goes."
