Mariah Carey Unveils Unreleased Tracks from Her Secret '90s Grunge Album
"Back in the 1990s, Mariah Carey secretly recorded a grunge album called Somebody's Ugly Daughter under the band name Chick. Her label at the time wouldn't let her unveil the version on which she sings lead, so instead it was quietly released with Carey on backing vocals and her friend and co-writer Clarissa Dane on lead vocals."
"Carey explained to Fallon that she recorded Somebody's Ugly Daughter during the sessions for her hit album Daydream, saying, "I was just rebelling, because I was working on Daydream, and I was doing 'Always Be My Baby' and 'Fantasy,' and those kinds of songs. I loved doing that, but at the end of the night, when the band was still there, I'd say, can you play, like [sings grungy guitar riff].""
"The version featuring Dane on lead vocals and Carey secretly on backing vocals (under the pseudonym D. Sue) bombed when it was released, as it got very little promotion from Epic Records. Carey is hoping to release the version with her lead vocals, saying she doesn't believe the tracks are tied to any label right now."
Mariah Carey recorded a grunge album in the 1990s under the band name Chick and originally sang lead on the tracks. The label blocked release of Carey's lead-vocal versions, so the record was released quietly with Clarissa Dane as lead and Carey on backing vocals under a pseudonym. Carey has begun revisiting and playing her original lead-vocal recordings during interviews and on television, showcasing songs with Hole, Veruca Salt and Buzzcocks-like influences. The initial release received little promotion from Epic Records and failed commercially. Carey hopes to release the recordings with her lead vocals and is simultaneously promoting a new album and a Las Vegas holiday residency.
