A community garden in Queens known for its anti-Israel stance and solidarity with Palestine has received a temporary reprieve from the city’s shutdown efforts. Judge Hasa Kingo blocked the city’s move to revoke the garden's license, allowing operations to continue as they face legal challenges. The site, now named Jardin de Santa Cecilia after Latina advocate Cecilia Gentili, previously alienated local Jewish residents. Garden leadership claims the city aims to erase their tribute to Gentili and suppress their solidarity efforts. The case will be revisited in court next month.
We hope to see the judge make this ruling permanent, preserving the garden as a sanctuary for queer, transgender, black, indigenous, and people of color communities.
Pride is a riot they can't silence and this garden is a home they can't take away from us.
The group accused the city of trying to 'erase a tribute' it erected last year to Gentili and 'punish our righteous solidarity with Palestinians facing genocide, and all oppressed peoples.'
The pledge list breached Parks Department guidelines, the city said when revoking the group's license on May 5.
