Why No One Knows What's Happening Tonight
Briefly

In an unexpected twist of fate during a canceled concert in Vermont, a return to Brooklyn as a tourist revealed an alarming decrease in accessible event listings. Previously reliable sources like The New Yorker, The New York Times, and The Village Voice guided the exploration of the city's arts scene. Over the last decade, however, these listings have virtually vanished. The New York Times eliminated its weekly arts listings in 2016, and the Village Voice folded in 2018, recently reviving without essential listings. The New Yorker's section was also significantly reduced in 2023.
The listings guided me through the cobwebbed bowels of St. Mark's Church and into the Ontological-Hysteric Theater hidden within, where Richard Foreman's mind-bending plays left a lasting impression.
Event listings have all but disappeared; The New York Times killed its weekly arts listings in 2016, and its online arts-and-entertainment guide is frozen since March 2020.
The Village Voice folded in 2018 and, although recently revived, lacks a listings section; The New Yorker’s arts section was drastically cut in 2023.
