Jury orders Boeing to pay $49.5 million to family of 737 MAX crash victim
"In November, a separate jury awarded more than $28 million in damages to the family of Shikha Garg, a United Nations environmental worker who was also killed in the 2019 crash. "We are deeply sorry to all who lost loved ones on Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302," Boeing said in a statemen"
A federal jury in Chicago awarded $49.5 million to the family of Samya Stumo, who died at age 24 in the second Boeing 737 MAX crash in 2019 in Ethiopia. The verdict addressed compensatory damages after Boeing admitted responsibility for the crash. Boeing avoided criminal prosecution through an agreement with the Justice Department and reached confidential settlements in many related lawsuits, while a few cases proceeded to trial. The jury awarded $21 million for Stumo’s experience during the fatal flight, $16.5 million for the family’s loss of companionship, and $12 million for the family’s grief. Attorneys indicated they would pursue punitive damages on appeal after dismissal. A separate jury previously awarded more than $28 million to Shikha Garg’s family for the same crash.
