In Khan Younis, Gazans like Abdel Rahman Asfour have resorted to creating homemade fuel from crushed plastic amidst severe shortages caused by a blockade. With no entry supplies allowed since early March, his team relies on old techniques and manual labor to produce usable gasoline and diesel from an innovative process. Despite risks of explosions and the challenges of working without modern equipment, their successes provide glimmers of hope. Recent humanitarian aid deliveries remain insufficient to meet the populationâs needs, forcing continued improvisation among residents.
We transport 900 kilos of this material by hand, without motors or pumps; we don't have the necessary equipment to do it any other way, says Asfour.
As the first trickles of gas shoot upward, Al-Aqqad's face lights up with a smile. It's proof it's working, he explains as he prepares to collect the liquid fuels.
