The NCBE has released its new blueprint for the NextGen UBE, set to replace traditional bar exams in nearly 40 states. This exam will now occur over a day and a half, reducing the testing time from 12 hours to 9 hours. The new format includes multiple-choice questions, integrated question sets, and performance tasks simulating real lawyering situations. The exam aims to better align the tested areas with the skills new attorneys require while practicing law, emphasizing both legal knowledge and practical abilities.
Each three-hour section will be arranged with 40 standalone multiple-choice questions (approximately 72 minutes) making up 49% of the score.
The NextGen UBE will test eight areas of legal doctrine and seven foundational lawyering skills, reflecting the work performed by newly licensed attorneys.
