During a City Council work session, the proposed extension of the Automated License Plate Reader program was withdrawn by City Manager T.C. Broadnax amidst significant opposition and privacy concerns. Council members, including Mike Siegel and Zo Qadri, voiced their disapproval, raising issues about the implications of surveillance on vulnerable populations, especially in light of recent political tensions. The community's worries were echoed by other council members, reflecting a strong consensus that further review and community input are necessary before any decision on the program's future is made.
Given concerns expressed today, I have decided to withdraw this item from the agenda at this time to provide more opportunities to address council members' questions.
We should not be using City of Austin resources to fund a mass surveillance tool that can be used by private companies and immigration authorities.
