""I have a lot of respect for Jim Schwartz, as I would hope he has for me. But I took it because of the players that are here, the ownership, [general manager] Andrew Berry, and the ability to build this roster from the ground up on the offensive side. ... When I was preparing for the Cleveland Browns, I wasn't trying to chip Jim Schwartz. I was chipping Myles Garrett.""
""I didn't take this job because of Jim Schwartz,""
""a little inappropriate for me to comment about that at this time.""
Todd Monken is assembling his Cleveland Browns staff and has spoken with incumbent defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Schwartz reportedly told people he is not returning after being passed over for the head coaching position. Monken expressed respect for Schwartz but declined detailed comment and emphasized taking the job for the players, ownership, Andrew Berry and the chance to rebuild the offense. Schwartz was a finalist in the recent search and previously in 2020. Monken is open to retaining Schwartz but offered no guarantee. Schwartz is under contract through 2026 and has led one of the league's top defenses since 2023.
