The College Football Playoff will avoid a New Year's Eve game for the 2026 season to prevent overlap with an NFL Thursday night game. Quarterfinals for that cycle are set for Wednesday, Dec. 30 at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl and a triple-header on Jan. 1, 2027 at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and Rose Bowl. Semifinals are scheduled Jan. 14 and Jan. 15, 2027 at the Capital One Orange Bowl and Allstate Sugar Bowl. For the 2027 season, quarterfinals return to Dec. 31 with a Jan. 1 triple-header, and semifinals fall on Jan. 13 and Jan. 14, 2028. The schedule is intended to preserve competitive balance and fan experience, and additional game times and television assignments will be announced later. A CFP game has appeared on New Year's Eve in each of the two seasons under the 12-team format and in half of the past 12 CFP-era seasons.
