"Cornerback Cam Smith's time with the Miami Dolphins has come to an end, waived by the team Tuesday. Smith was a second-round pick of the Dolphins in 2023 but never materialized as the long-term solution the Dolphins hoped for to lead the secondary beyond the tenures of veterans Jalen Ramsey and Xavien Howard at the position that season. It was expected Smith wouldn't make the team during roster cuts in late April,"
"Four weeks into the regular season, the South Carolina product was cut. Smith was a surprise selection in the second round of the 2023 draft, as the Dolphins brought him on board despite trading for former Los Angeles Rams star cornerback Jalen Ramsey to pair him with their own former All-Pro Xavien Howard. Nonetheless, Smith was expected to take a developmental year behind Ramsey, Howard and other veterans on the 2023 roster."
Cam Smith was waived by the Miami Dolphins after injuries, limited availability and minimal defensive playing time since being a 2023 second-round pick. He was expected to develop behind veterans Jalen Ramsey and Xavien Howard but played only 20 defensive snaps as a rookie and contributed mainly on special teams. A preseason hamstring injury and a subsequent shoulder injury that led to injured reserve disrupted Year 2. Smith missed training camp and preseason this year, was placed on the non-football illness list for undisclosed reasons, and ultimately was cut four weeks into the regular season. The Dolphins continue to rely on Jack Jones and Rasul Douglas as starters.
