""I went to the Super Bowl when they lost to Peyton Manning, and that was tough," Maye said. "But yeah, just that season. I think they were 15-1. I was at that NFC Championship game at home, big time win. Just being a fan of Cam [Newton] was probably the biggest memory, him coming out here, doing the airplane and hitting 'The Cam.'""
""So, just little things like that, and getting to know him later on and playing him. He coached the 7-on-7 team and playing against him and seeing stuff like that. So, just getting to know some of the players around has been pretty cool.""
""Right when I saw those jerseys, it reminded me of Cam, just the energy he brought," Maye said. "I don't show much emotion out there, probably need to show more. Times when I do, yeah - it's a fun loving position.""
Drake Maye, raised in Huntersville, North Carolina, returned to face his hometown team, the Carolina Panthers, while playing for the New England Patriots. Maye recalled attending the Panthers' deep playoff run and admired former Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, citing memories like Newton's airplane entrance and the 'Cam' celebration. Maye threw two touchdown passes and ran for a five-yard touchdown on a bootleg as the Patriots defeated the Panthers 42-13 at Gillette Stadium. Maye mimicked Newton's signature 'Superman' end-zone celebration and said he doesn't often show emotion but enjoys the fun, energetic aspects of the position.
