Indiana QB sorry for 'cooked' spreads after safety
"Coach said, 'Hey, take a safety, run out of the end zone,'"
"When I got to the 2, I saw all zeros on the clock, but I kept going."
"I know I really cooked people's spreads. My apologies out to them."
"We've never been tested like that," said offensive lineman Pat Coogan. "We have so much room to get better. And that's the best feeling."
Indiana held a 20-13 lead late and a final defensive stop left Iowa with a fourth-and-19. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza followed coach Curt Cignetti’s instruction to take a safety and run out of the end zone, racing backward into the end zone and being tackled as time expired. Those two points made the final score 20-15 and had potential impact on alternate betting spreads. Earlier, Mendoza threw a 49-yard touchdown to Elijah Sarratt with 1:28 remaining. Sarratt finished with six catches for 132 yards. Coach Cignetti called the win a "gut check," and offensive lineman Pat Coogan noted the team had room to improve after being tested.
