Sources: Colts to activate Rivers for Seattle game
"The Indianapolis Colts on Saturday will elevated the newly-unretired quarterback from the practice squad to the 53-man active roster, making him officially eligible to play in Sunday's against the Seattle Seahawks, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Rivers, who retired after the 2020 season and last play in a playoff game in January 2021, came out of retirement this week to help the Colts address their quarterback situation in the wake of Daniel Jones' season-ending Achilles injury."
"Coach Shane Steichen on Friday was noncommittal on a starter, but he made it clear things were trending toward Rivers starting against the talented Seattle defense in his first game in over 1,800 days. "I'll say it was pretty good," Steichen said of Rivers' practices this week. "A guy that hasn't been out there in five years, to go and practice the way he did this week was pretty impressive to watch.""
Philip Rivers came out of retirement and was promoted from the practice squad to the Indianapolis Colts' 53-man roster, making him eligible to play against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Rivers retired after the 2020 season and last played in a playoff game in January 2021; he is 44. The Colts signed him after Daniel Jones suffered a season-ending Achilles injury. By joining the active roster, Rivers loses current semifinalist Pro Football Hall of Fame eligibility and cannot be eligible again until 2031. Coach Shane Steichen praised Rivers' practices and indicated Rivers is trending toward starting in his first game in over 1,800 days.
