"I don't know how long you've been doing this, but I'm sure you're quite educated on it. I don't really think an interim coach has that much authority over personnel. If that's the case, I would've never gotten rid of our best player. Christian McCaffrey."
"This is a tough business. Sitting in this seat, it was a tough decision on my part, but something I felt like was the best move for the team moving forward.'"
Steve Wilks responded to Baker Mayfield's claim that Wilks cut him in Carolina by initially praising Mayfield and then denying the assertion. Wilks told a reporter he does not believe an interim coach has much authority over personnel and said that, if interim coaches had such power, he would not have gotten rid of Christian McCaffrey. Wilks was interim coach on Dec. 5, 2022, when Mayfield was released after Wilks replaced Matt Rhule. Wilks said the Mayfield decision was mutual, called it a tough business decision, and said Mayfield asked for his release after learning he would not be the starter or backup.
