"I can't open the windows because I can taste the toxins, it's like rubber burning in my mouth,"
"We can't open our windows anymore: some nights it's so strong it fills the room,"
"won't go outside, I won't go to the park,"

An asphalt recycling plant in Long Island City has operated since 2011 and received a January 2024 state citation for emitting fumes that interfered with comfortable enjoyment of life or property under state air pollution law. Neighbors in eastern Greenpoint and the Blissville section of Long Island City report a worsening burning-rubber stench, frequent migraines, respiratory problems and aggravated asthma. Some residents avoid opening windows, leave their homes less often and avoid outdoor spaces, describing feelings of being trapped. OSHA guidance lists asphalt fume risks including throat irritation, cough, fatigue and increased cancer risk. Plant ownership denies hazardous emissions and blames social media.
