"The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is warning OMNY users to make sure their cards are loaded before this weekend. In a recent notification on the transportation agency's website, the MTA warned that system upgrades could affect reloading the balance on OMNY cards throughout the upcoming weekend. The system upgrades will last from 10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5."
"OMNY cards can still be used during that time, but travelers will not be able to buy new cards or add value to existing cards. According to the post, trip and charge history will also be unavailable. The MTA stated that OMNY card users should load their account before the upgrade starts or tap their phone, debit card, or credit card to pay."
"Starting in January 2026, the MTA will no longer sell MetroCards. As the system transitions to OMNY, the MTA will also retire the pre-paid seven- and 30-day unlimited passes, along with the Express Bus Plus option. At a later point in 2026, the MTA will no longer accept MetroCards. Local buses will also no longer accept coins as a form of fare payment around this time."
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will perform OMNY system upgrades from 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5. OMNY cards will remain usable during the upgrades, but users cannot buy new cards, add value, or access trip and charge history. Riders should load accounts before the upgrade or use phone, debit, or credit card tap-to-pay. The MTA plans to fully transition to OMNY and retire MetroCard sales starting January 2026, eliminate certain prepaid unlimited passes and Express Bus Plus, stop accepting MetroCards and coins on local buses later in 2026, raise OMNY card price to $2, and save at least $20 million annually.
