This new Midtown skyscraper will let thrill-seeking New Yorkers free-fall 300 feet
Briefly

The Torch, a 52-story skyscraper at 740 Eighth Avenue, aims to provide an adrenaline-pumping experience by including a free-fall ride plummeting 300 feet in transparent tubes. This novel attraction combines views with a thrill, as riders will drop at speeds nearing 60 mph. In addition to the ride, The Torch will offer a traditional observation deck and a glass-bottomed elevator. The building will also feature 825 hotel rooms, retail spaces, and a rooftop restaurant, with an expected completion date in 2026.
In 2026, adrenaline junkies will get to experience the city from a heart-stopping new perspective: Plummeting 300 feet in transparent tubes, courtesy of The Torch.
The Torch wants to offer both panoramic views and the kind of free fall that usually ends with you jerking awake, combining observation deck and theme park ride.
The attraction will be housed inside a spire lit to resemble a literal torch, taking riders to the top before dropping them straight down at speeds approaching 60 mph.
The project was designed by studios ODA and SLCE, and construction on The Torch is already underway, with estimates of its opening in 2026.
