"Zohran knows that 5-year-olds should not be subjected to a singular assessment that unfairly separates them right at the beginning of their public school education,"
"His agenda for our schools will ensure that every New York City public school student receives a high-quality early education that enables them to be challenged and fulfilled."
"If there are tens of thousands of applications for limited G&T spots, parents are telling you something: They want more of it, not less,"

Zohran Mamdani would end the Gifted & Talented kindergarten program across New York City public schools if elected mayor, applying the change only to incoming kindergarteners. The proposal echoes former Mayor de Blasio's 2021 plan to phase out elementary G&T classes, which Mayor Adams later reversed and expanded while altering admissions away from tests toward preschool teacher recommendations and a lottery. Existing kindergarten G&T classes would continue through the current school year but would not be offered next fall. The G&T program has been criticized for contributing to segregation because enrolled students skew white and Asian. Andrew Cuomo called the plan destructive and urged fixing selection processes and expanding opportunities instead.
