Eric Adams Drops Out of New York City Mayoral Race
""Although our successes... I know I cannot continue my campaign,""
""I strongly encourage whoever takes over City Hall to continue what we've done.""
""When I go to my funders, they say, 'Eric, we thought you were in Saudi Arabia,'""
""I've been sitting down with my team, having our pathways, finding out how we get the money into the coffers to do the commercials, to do the mailings, to pay for our team and staff,""
Mayor Eric Adams announced Sunday that he was dropping out of the mayoral race. In a social media video he descended the Gracie Mansion stairs holding a large photo of his mother while Frank Sinatra's "My Way" played. He said he could not continue his campaign and refused to endorse remaining candidates, while urging a successor to continue prior work. Adams repeatedly denied contemplating quitting despite reports he might accept a federal or private-sector job and said speculation decimated fundraising. He said media coverage undermined his campaign and described efforts to raise money for ads, mailings, and staff. Adams faces federal charges including bribery, conspiracy, fraud and soliciting illegal foreign campaign contributions, and his approval ratings had fallen before shifting from the Democratic primary to an independent run.
