NY Islanders' Matthew Schaefer Honors Late Mother With Emotional $150K Initiative
"Islanders co-owner Jon Ledecky summed it up perfectly, saying the goal is to make sure no child has to go through those moments alone. For a franchise trying to build its next era around Schaefer, this feels bigger than hockey. It feels personal."
The New York Islanders announced a $150,000 donation to help create a child support center at Northwell Health’s R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Hospital in New Hyde Park. The center will be named for Jennifer Schaefer, the late mother of Islanders rookie Matthew Schaefer, who died from breast cancer in February 2024. The space is intended to provide children with a safe, comforting, and supportive place to stay while a parent undergoes cancer treatment. The Jennifer Schaefer Child Support Center is expected to open in October. The organization’s support is also reflected in the pink breast cancer ribbon placed on Schaefer’s jersey at the draft, and in his daily acknowledgment of his mother’s strength and hope.
