"I made a post about seeing a cartoon in the movie theater, a PG-13 movie. I always watched movies before taking my kids to see them so I could decide if it was appropriate (my kids are autistic). In my post, I commented about a mom bringing in an infant. I mentioned it wasn't appropriate, for one, because the decibel level is loud enough to damage an infant's hearing, and second, the baby cried through the whole movie. They lost it on me. Called me names, told me I was wrong, made fun of me for going to the movie in the first place."
Making friends as an adult is challenging, and becoming a new mother intensifies this difficulty. Despite stereotypes portraying mothers as warm and welcoming, many experience toxicity within mom friend groups. A community survey revealed numerous stories of mothers encountering clique-like behavior, exclusionary tactics, and judgment from other parents. These groups often mirror high school social dynamics, featuring dominant personalities, unexplained exclusions, and harsh criticism. Members reported being mocked, called names, and attacked for parenting choices or innocent comments. Even non-parents sometimes experienced negative effects from these toxic social circles. The prevalence of these experiences suggests that toxic mom groups represent a widespread phenomenon affecting maternal social connections and community building.
