60 birds confiscated from suspected Mass. cockfighting operation
"It's hard to state just how cruel and inhumane these kinds of things are,"
"Unfortunately, these things are happening in Massachusetts, but they're underground and clandestine, so it's incredibly challenging for us to find them,"
"We rely on people to recognize the signs that cockfighting may be happening and to contact us so we can handle it."
MSPCA-Angell investigators and Massachusetts State Police executed a warrant at a Springfield property and seized more than 60 birds after a months-long investigation. Investigators found paraphernalia consistent with cockfighting, including sharp implements attached to roosters' legs meant to cause severe injuries. Cockfighting is illegal and often results in punctured lungs, evisceration, broken bones, and eye damage, commonly tied to gambling and entertainment. Typical signs include a large number of roosters housed individually. The seized birds are being held at an undisclosed location pending court proceedings, and the names of alleged participants were not released. Law enforcement urged the public to report signs of cockfighting.
