Rover-tourism: Italian province proposes tourist tax for dogs
"Authorities in Bolzano, located in the mountainous Trentino-Alto Adige region, have proposed charging 1.50 a night for dogs visiting the province and 100 a year per dog for resident dog owners. If passed by the provincial council, some of the proceeds will be used to rid the streets of dog poo after a failed policy enacted last year that required dogs to undergo DNA tests in order to identify culprits."
"This tax is pure madness and contrasts with what happens in the rest of Italy, where no taxes are paid on pet ownership, the Italian animal rights group Aidaa said. It urged Bolzano authorities to backtrack on the proposal. If the law passes, we will plan civil disobedience actions to immediately boycott it. Carla Rocchi, the president of Enpa, Italy's animal protection agency, said the measure was an own goal that not only penalised families and tourists but also sent a profoundly flawed message:"
Bolzano province in Trentino-Alto Adige would charge 1.50 a night for visiting dogs and 100 a year per dog for residents if the provincial council passes the measure. Some proceeds would fund street cleaning to remove dog poo after a failed DNA-testing policy intended to identify culprits. Councillor Luis Walcher described the tax as fair because it targets dog owners and would also fund new dog parks, with hopes of enactment from 2026. Animal-rights group Aidaa labelled the tax 'pure madness' and threatened civil disobedience. Enpa president Carla Rocchi said the measure penalised families and tourists and risked treating animals like an ATM. Mayor Claudio Corrarati criticised the impression of closure.
