Share the Spirit: Paws In Need helps families pay for critical pet care
"Kip had been struck by a vehicle, and by the time he was under medical care, his lungs were so full of fluid, his gallbladder and liver had been displaced. The open chest surgery would cost thousands of dollars. Kip, a rescue dog whose life-saving surgery was funded in part by Paws In Need, has recovered and is shown here enjoying going for a hike. "That's when Paws In Need stepped in, a nonprofit that provides financial assistance to dog and cat owners for veterinary care. It was super serious because that couldn't just go to a general doctor, said Lisa Williams, the organization's co-founder, president and medical programs director. It had to go to a specialist. For over a decade, the San Ramon-based organization has helped Tri-Valley area pet owners offset the cost of surgeries, like Kip's, through small grants."
Chandler and Colton Casey found an emaciated, injured dog named Kip who had been struck by a vehicle and required open chest surgery. Kip's lungs were full of fluid and his gallbladder and liver were displaced, necessitating specialist care that would cost thousands. Paws In Need provided partial funding for the life-saving surgery. The San Ramon-based nonprofit offers financial assistance to dog and cat owners for veterinary care and prioritizes spay and neuter programs to reduce shelter overcrowding and unnecessary euthanasia. Since 2013, the all-volunteer organization has helped over 8,000 animals, averaging nearly 90 assisted animals per month.
