Should you take your dog on holiday? We went on a European road trip with our border terrier to find out
Briefly

After a last-minute cancellation by their dog sitters, the author resolved to take their dog, Missy, on a month-long vacation. Though excited initially, the trip did not go well for Missy. As they traveled through France and Spain, she seemed to struggle with new environments, appearing confused and anxious. Unlike her enjoyment of local parks back home, the change in scenery and other unfriendly dogs left her feeling withdrawn, highlighting the potential challenges of traveling with pets.
At each motorway pit stop, she pulled me towards unfamiliar smells with an urgency that bordered on the deranged, and then, once we had arrived, she remained in a state of perpetual confusion.
Seeing her tail tucked tightly into her body, I became convinced she'd sunk into a depression. The dogs she encountered during our daily walks were baldly antagonistic towards her.
