Almost 16,000 people homeless as another record high reached

Emergency accommodation usage is on the rise, with 10,957 adults and 4,958 children reported in late June. The latest figures show an increase from the previous count of 15,747, including 4,844 children. Numbers have been continuously rising since surpassing 10,000 for the first time in 2019. The to-date statistics exclude the homeless not using official shelters, such as those sleeping rough or in domestic violence shelters. An eviction ban was implemented from November 2022 to March 2023 in an attempt to mitigate homelessness increases.
The number of people accessing emergency accommodation has been steadily increasing for years, surpassing 10,000 for the first time in 2019 and again in February 2020.
Figures published show 10,957 adults and 4,958 children accessed emergency accommodation in the last week of June, leading to a total increase from the past tally.
