""I was always observing my mom, my aunt, and the women around me putting lipstick on and doing their eyes and their hair and putting on all these amazing hats," she tells Bustle. "I was very inspired by how transformational and empowering it felt. Some of them didn't have much, but they always looked put together, and that made them feel good.""
""I saw how things were made behind the scenes," she says. "That's when I fell in love with it.""
Aïda Moudachiro-Rébois grew up in Benin surrounded by family who dressed up for every occasion but identified as a tomboy with three brothers. She observed women applying makeup and found the transformation empowering, even when resources were limited. She moved to Paris at 14 and secured an internship at L'Oréal, where she learned product-making processes and developed a passion for the beauty industry. She became senior vice president and global general manager of MAC Cosmetics and leads Viva Glam, a campaign started in the mid-1990s that donates 100% of selected product proceeds to HIV/AIDS relief. MAC has raised nearly $540 million and aims for the next $500 million.
