"Seasonal cases of influenza in France have reached epidemic levels earlier than usual in 2025, but it is still not too late to get vaccinated, officials have said. Seasonal flu and bronchiolitis epidemics have spread across almost all of metropolitan France since the beginning of December, with Corsica - the last region still at pre-epidemic levels - expected to follow soon, according to a Santé Publique France report published on Wednesday."
"The week ending December 7th, saw the "continued increase in flu indicators in all age groups," Santé Publique France said in its weekly report, noting that "all metropolitan regions (are) in epidemic except for Corsica, which has moved into pre-epidemic". With cases reported as early as September in some hospitals, the 2025 flu season is several weeks ahead of its 'classic' winter schedule, which usually peaks in January in France. As well as being earlier than usual, an unfamiliar variant is also spreading. A subgroup of the H3N2 strain, known as the K variant, has mutated in such a way that it has become more transmissible between humans. Although it is more infectious, it is not more serious than the H1N1"
Seasonal influenza and bronchiolitis reached epidemic levels across nearly all metropolitan regions of France by early December 2025, with Corsica still at pre-epidemic. Indicators increased across all age groups during the week ending December 7. Cases were reported in some hospitals as early as September, placing the season several weeks ahead of the usual January peak. A mutated H3N2 subgroup, called the K variant, has become more transmissible between humans while not appearing more severe than H1N1. Vaccination remains beneficial and is still recommended at this stage of the season.
