No Proof Whatsoever!' Fox's Dr. Marc Siegel Pours Cold Water On Tylenol-Autism Link Promoted By Trump and RFK Jr.
"We distinguish between something called an association and something called proof for a cause and effect. It's possible, due to some studies, that excess use of acetaminophen could lead to neurodevelopmental problems like autism, because the fetus if you think about it doesn't have a fully developed liver. And that's where the Tylenol goes. It goes to the liver to be metabolized [that's] a reason why I'm saying [pregnant women should] take less of it."
"But we're far away from any proof here, and women who are pregnant need to get that fever down. That's why I think the reaction has been excessive on the side of caution here. I'm glad we're cautioning pregnant women, but seems to me too much caution has come out. This is not the first time recently where Siegel has taken issue with a position from the HHS secretary."
No proof exists that acetaminophen during pregnancy causes autism. Some studies report an association between excess acetaminophen use and neurodevelopmental problems, but association is not proof of causation. Fetal liver immaturity alters acetaminophen metabolism, which supports recommending reduced doses for pregnant individuals. Fever control in pregnancy remains important for maternal and fetal health. Concerns about the risk have prompted heightened caution, which some view as excessive. Separate public-health debates have emphasized tensions between personal vaccine choice and community protection, with warnings that widespread opt-outs can increase viral spread and hospitalizations.
