"While patients may not notice right away, a dulled nose can have a profound impact on their mental and physical wellbeing."
"You can't smell smoke, you can't smell the gas leak, you can't smell spoiled food."
The Independent seeks donations to fund on-the-ground journalism without paywalls, supporting reporters who cover major US issues across the political spectrum. A National Institutes of Health-led study examined smell function two years after Covid infection and found that 80% of people who reported smell changes performed poorly on a clinical scent-detection test. About one in four of those who noticed a change had severe smell impairment or complete loss. Loss of smell can harm mental and physical wellbeing, reduce appetite and nutrition, and create everyday safety risks like inability to detect smoke, gas leaks, or spoiled food.
