U.S. Issues Level 2 Alert for Mosquito-Borne Virus in Several Countries-What to Know
"Symptoms of the chikungunya virus typically begin within about three to seven days after someone is bitten by an infected mosquito, according to the agency. While the most common symptoms are fever and joint pain, people can develop a headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, or a rash. The CDC said most people get better within a week, but some could suffer from joint pain for months or longer."
""Severe symptoms and deaths from chikungunya are rare and usually occur in young babies or elderly people with other coexisting health problems," according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The CDC recommended travelers get vaccinated against the virus if they are visiting an area with a current outbreak and considered getting vaccinated if they are planning to visit an area with an elevated risk and planning to stay there for an extended period of time."
Chikungunya is a mosquito-transmitted virus that causes fever, severe joint pain, headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, and rash. Symptoms typically begin three to seven days after an infectious mosquito bite, most people recover within a week, and some experience prolonged joint pain for months. Recent Level 2 travel advisories cover outbreaks in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Cuba, and China, with elevated risk reported in Brazil, Colombia, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Thailand. Locally-acquired cases have not been reported in the United States or its territories since at least 2019. Vaccination is recommended for travelers to outbreak areas and considered for extended stays in elevated-risk locations.
