Generation Rent: 'Me and my colleague are trying to buy a house together but we still can't find a decent, affordable home in Dublin'
"I spent my last five years in Ireland trying to buy a house of my own. This year, I grew so tired of the search that I tried to get a mortgage approved with the help of a colleague in a similar situation - and I still couldn't afford it. I've had my mortgage approved for myself twice since I moved to Ireland from Vietnam back in 2020. Even with loans or a mortgage, my options were very limited - I've not been able to afford a house I felt safe in."

Nhi Thao Nguyen is 28 and moved from Vietnam to Ireland in 2020. She spent five years attempting to buy a house in Ireland without success. She sought mortgage approval twice for herself and also tried to secure a mortgage with assistance from a colleague in a similar situation. Despite receiving approvals, she could not afford properties that met her safety and affordability standards. Loan offers and mortgages did not expand her practical options. The search and repeated setbacks left her exhausted and still unable to purchase a home in the city.
