Shelter Island vs. the Solovievs
"When the Soloviev Group bought the Shelter Island Heights Pharmacy in March 2022, the local reactions ranged from cautiously optimistic to openly distrustful. Besides being a local gathering spot with a soda fountain and ice cream, the pharmacy was the only place on the island to get a prescription filled. "Why are they buying the entire island? This feels really wrong and upsetting," a local woman wrote on the Shelter Island Reporter's Instagram at the time."
"By that point, Stefan Soloviev, who'd recently inherited his somewhat estranged father's Manhattan-centric real-estate empire, had spent more than a decade amassing vineyards, farms, and small businesses on the North Fork, where he claims to be the largest landowner. (That ambition also applied to his acquisition of massive tracts of farmland and railroad spurs out West). On Shelter Island, Soloviev had already purchased a local Victorian hotel, the Chequit, and Jack's Marine, a beloved local boat and everything-else shop."
Stefan Soloviev intensified land and business acquisitions on Shelter Island after acquiring the Shelter Island Heights Pharmacy in March 2022. The pharmacy functioned as the island's only outlet for filling prescriptions and served as a community gathering spot with a soda fountain and ice cream. Initial reactions included cautious optimism and distrust, and Soloviev's ex-wife Stacey reassured locals that the purchase was intended to save the pharmacy. A little over three years later, the Soloviev Group, with their son Hayden leading local operations, announced the pharmacy's closure effective October 7, angering seniors and year-round residents.
