Notable Bay Area city left off NYT's best dishes in America list
"At Popoca, the buzzy Salvadorean and live fire restaurant from Anthony Salguero, chief restaurant critic Rao praised the guaca-mol appetizer with tortilla and asiento. "The guaca-mol here is lush with herbs, seasoned ever so sharply, then covered with smoked egg yolk. It's a marvel on its own, but part of the magic of the dish is the wonderfully pudgy Salvi tortilla that accompanies it, still hot from the comal and shining with crispy beef asiento," Rao wrote."
"Tanzie's, at 1453 Dwight Way in Berkeley, is known for its northern Thai brunch. Chefs Krissana "Tanz" Tussanaprasit and Jezreel "Jae" Rojas, who met at the Michelin-starred Thai restaurant Kin Khao in San Francisco, focus on making every dish from scratch. Times writer Park highlighted the khanom krok street food staple, which she said is the "best way" to start breakfast at the restaurant."
An annual national best-dishes list for 2025 included three Bay Area restaurants: Popoca in Oakland, Tanzie's in Berkeley, and Daeho Kalbijjim in San Mateo. Popoca is a buzzy Salvadorean live-fire restaurant from Anthony Salguero; its guaca-mol is lush with herbs, sharply seasoned, covered with smoked egg yolk, and served with a hot Salvi tortilla shining with crispy beef asiento. Popoca opened in 2023 and has received national recognition, including Bon Appétit and Los Angeles Times mentions and a top-five Bay Area ranking from the San Francisco Chronicle. Tanzie's focuses on northern Thai brunch with scratch-made dishes and a highlighted khanom krok breakfast. Daeho Kalbijjim operates as a small Korean chain in San Mateo. San Francisco had no entries in 2025.
