Only two Santa Clara County races are competitive - San Jose Spotlight
"More choice is always better for voters. I don't think it's great to have uncontested races. It's often difficult to lose as an incumbent, so that dissuades a lot of people because they don't feel they have a good chance and don't love the scrutiny of running for public office - especially with social media and online vitriol."
"District Attorney Rosen is not as lucky as his spouse this year, as he faces a challenge from one of his employees, Deputy District Attorney Daniel Chung. The two originally squared off after Chung wrote a 2021 opinion article critical of Rosen's progressive criminal justice reforms following racist violence toward Asian Americans."
Santa Clara County's June 2 primary election shows mixed competition levels among top officials. Sheriff Bob Jonsen, Assessor Neysa Fligor, and Supervisor Susan Ellenberg will run unopposed, while District Attorney Jeff Rosen and Supervisor Sylvia Arenas face challengers. Additionally, 28 governor-appointed superior court judges have no opponents. Political science experts note that uncontested races disadvantage voters by limiting choices and allowing incumbents to avoid scrutiny. Rosen faces a challenge from Deputy District Attorney Daniel Chung, stemming from a 2021 dispute over an opinion article critical of Rosen's criminal justice reforms.
