Santa Clara County sheriff expands use of drones - San Jose Spotlight
Briefly

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office plans to expand drone deployment in response to calls for service, aiming to reduce officer violence. However, this initiative has sparked concerns from its oversight agency regarding the vague rules governing drone use, particularly in relation to community policing, especially in communities of color. Supervisors have requested clearer policies and more accountability after incidents of unapproved drone use at protests. The Board of Supervisors has moved forward with the proposal, emphasizing the need for defined guidelines to prevent potential misuse of this technology.
We take any concerns about the authorization process for drone use seriously and are finalizing a policy that clearly defines the purpose and guidelines for deploying drones.
People have a right to congregate and demonstrate. I can see there might be an opportunity to over-police in Black and brown neighborhoods. I don't like this idea of folks being overly policed.
