California's Senator Scott Wiener has introduced SB 79, legislation that aims to increase housing near public transit. Recently passing the Senate with a narrow margin, the bill proposes upzoning near rail and bus stations, allowing for taller buildings, and enabling transit agencies to set zoning standards for their properties. Supporters argue it will alleviate the housing crisis and enhance ridership on transit systems. The bill's next hurdle is the Assembly, after which it could be signed into law by the Governor. Opposition mostly comes from certain political factions concerned about the implications of increased density.
Wiener argues that SB 79 will both increase the housing stock of the state and increase transit ridership as people living nearer to bus rapid transit and rail lines will be more likely to use those services.
California urgently needs to build more homes to bring down costs, and building them near transit provides our public transportation systems with an urgently needed infusion of new riders.
