"The festivities will go well beyond 6:30 pm, as this celebration is quite the family-friendly bash. There's a holiday train, carnival rides, lion dancers, a slew of food trucks, and a stage with live music. Mayor Daniel Lurie will be on hand to give remarks, as will outgoing Rec and Parks director Phil Ginsburg, if that does anything for you. This tree lighting has been happening every year, even during COVID, since 1929."
Uncle John's Tree, a 145-year-old, 83-foot Monterey cypress at Stanyan and Fell streets, serves as San Francisco's official Christmas tree. The 96th annual Golden Gate Park Tree Lighting will light the tree with 550 multi-colored lights at 6:30 pm on Thursday, December 4, with festivities running 4-8 pm. The family-friendly event features a holiday train, carnival rides, lion dancers, food trucks, live music, cookie decorating, and remarks from Mayor Daniel Lurie and outgoing Rec and Parks director Phil Ginsburg. The lighting tradition dates to 1929 when electric lights were still unusual. Additional holiday light events include Pier 39 tonight and Salesforce Park's Winterfest Friday evening.
